State unclaimed property databases don’t reach federal programs. The IRS, Social Security Administration and PBGC each hold separate pools requiring a completely different search.
usa.gov covers all federal unclaimed money sources in one place — free, official:

The IRS holds over $1 billion in undelivered refunds annually. The PBGC holds $900 million in lost pension benefits. A thorough federal search takes under 30 minutes and costs nothing.

IRS Unclaimed Tax Refunds — Who Qualifies and How to Search
When an IRS refund check goes to an old address — or a direct deposit hits a closed account — the refund returns to the IRS and is held as an unclaimed amount.
Use the IRS ‘Where’s My Refund’ tool at irs.gov for recent returns. For older refunds, filing a late return within the three-year window can still unlock payment.
⚠️ The three-year IRS window is the only hard deadline in federal unclaimed money. After three years from the original filing deadline, the refund is permanently forfeited. Check irs.gov immediately if you believe a refund is owed.
Social Security: Unclaimed Benefits and How to Check
Unclaimed Social Security payments can involve significant amounts — particularly survivor benefits and lump-sum death payments that eligible family members never claimed.
The SSA does not maintain a public searchable database. Contact them directly at ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213 to check your earnings record and benefit history.
✅ If a spouse or parent died without collecting their final Social Security payment — or without a survivor benefit claim being filed — contact the SSA. Survivor benefits are often left unclaimed simply because families didn’t know they existed.
PBGC: How to Find an Unclaimed Pension
The PBGC insures private-sector defined benefit pension plans. When a company terminates its pension, the PBGC takes over and pays benefits to eligible workers.
The PBGC holds over $900 million in unclaimed benefits — primarily for former workers who changed addresses or didn’t know they had a vested pension. Search is free at pbgc.gov.
💡 Search the PBGC database under every former employer’s name, including companies that merged or changed names. Many workers don’t realize they vested in a pension at a job they left decades ago.
US Savings Bonds — TreasuryDirect Search
Billions in US savings bonds have matured and gone uncashed. Paper bonds from decades ago — often given as gifts — are commonly forgotten.
Matured bonds stop earning interest but remain redeemable indefinitely. Search at treasurydirect.gov/savings-bonds/treasury-hunt/ by Social Security number. Takes under two minutes.
How to Complete All Federal Searches in One Session
None of the federal portals link to each other. Work through them in order — the full process takes under 30 minutes:
- IRS — irs.gov/refunds for recent years; check for older unfiled returns if applicable
- PBGC — pbgc.gov, search ‘Find My Pension’ under every former employer
- TreasuryDirect — treasurydirect.gov, use Treasury Hunt for savings bonds by SSN
- SSA — ssa.gov/myaccount to review your earnings record and survivor benefit eligibility
- State databases — missingmoney.com + your individual state portal, if not done already

Can I get an IRS refund from more than three years ago? ▼
No. The IRS three-year window is firm. After three years from the original filing deadline, unclaimed refunds are permanently transferred to the US Treasury and cannot be recovered.
What if I don’t know my former employer’s pension plan name? ▼
The PBGC search works by company name, not plan name. Search under every employer you worked for. If the company was acquired, also search under the acquiring company’s name.
Are US savings bonds still valid if I lost the physical paper? ▼
Yes. Matured paper bonds can be redeemed without the physical certificate if you can supply the bond serial number or Social Security number of the original owner.
Does searching federal databases affect my credit score? ▼
No. Searching through IRS tools, PBGC, SSA or TreasuryDirect does not trigger a credit inquiry and has no effect on your credit score.
